The Real Benefits of a Wood Burning Stove (and the Honest Downsides)
A wood burner is one of the most genuinely self-sufficient things you can add to a home — heat you control, that keeps working when the power doesn't. But it's not all cosy glow.
Why people fit one — the genuine benefits
Strip away the lifestyle photos and a stove earns its place for solid, practical reasons:
- Heat you don't buy from a supplier. Burn wood you've sourced and seasoned yourself and your heating cost drops towards zero. Even buying logs, running a stove in the evenings and at weekends through a UK winter typically costs around £420–£490 a year — against £1,600–£2,200 to heat a home on gas or electric.
- It works when the grid doesn't. A power cut takes your gas boiler with it (the pump and controls are electric) and stops a heat pump dead. A log stove doesn't care — it needs nothing but wood and a match, so it keeps a room warm, dries clothes and boils a kettle on top through the worst winter outage. For genuine resilience, that independence is the whole point.
- Zone your heat. Central heating warms every room whether you're in it or not. A stove heats the room you actually live in while the boiler stays off — often the single biggest saving of all, because you're heating far less space.
- You can cook on it. A kettle, a pan, a slow-simmered pot — free cooking off heat you're already making.
- Efficiency has come a long way. A modern Ecodesign stove burning dry wood is at least 75% efficient — a world away from an open fire, which throws most of its heat straight up the chimney.
When you take on an off-grid or derelict property, a wood stove is often the first heat you install. It needs no mains, no gas connection and no complex plumbing — just a sound flue. It can warm and dry a building while the rest of the services are still years off.
The efficiency depends on your fuel
This is the bit that decides whether a stove is clean and cheap or smoky and wasteful. The same stove performs completely differently depending on what you feed it:

The honest downsides
No sugar-coating — a stove is a commitment:
- Up-front cost. A fitted log burner in 2026 runs roughly £1,800–£5,500+ — the stove itself £700–£2,500, a flue liner £400–£2,500, plus a HETAS-registered installation (add ~£100–£300 for the certification). It pays back over years, not months.
- It's work. Wood to source, split, stack and season for a year; a fire to lay, light and tend; ash to clear; a chimney to sweep. If you want heat at the flick of a switch, this isn't it.
- Air quality. Burnt properly it's far cleaner than it was, but wood smoke is still a real pollutant — and in a Smoke Control Area you legally need a DEFRA-exempt appliance.
- Ongoing safety. Two chimney sweeps a year, and a carbon-monoxide alarm is a legal requirement in the room — a £20–£50 item that is not optional.
Since 2021 it's illegal to sell wet logs in small volumes in England — burn only "Ready to Burn" wood under 20% moisture. Any new stove must be Ecodesign-compliant, and the top performers carry the clearSkies mark, which goes beyond even Ecodesign on emissions. Dry wood in a modern stove is a completely different thing from the smoky old image.
Where we stand
A wood burner earns its place if you value independence, have space to store a winter's wood, and don't mind the graft — especially if you can get wood cheaply or free. It won't suit a townhouse with no storage and no time, where it's more romance than sense. But for cutting bills, riding out power cuts and heating a place off-grid, few things are as reliably self-sufficient. Buy a modern Ecodesign stove, burn Ready-to-Burn wood, sweep it twice a year, and it'll outlive you.
