So which is actually "cleaner"?

It depends what you mean by clean. At the point of use, gas burns cleanest for local air quality — but it's a fossil fuel, so its carbon footprint is fixed and its price only trends upward. Wood is low-carbon if it's sustainably sourced and burnt dry in a modern Ecodesign stove — but a smoky fire of wet wood is genuinely dirty, dropping to 8–50% efficiency and pumping out particulates. Pellet splits the difference: renewable, and a very clean, tightly-controlled burn, at the cost of needing mains power and bought-in fuel. "Cleaner" therefore means gas or pellet for local air, but wood (done right) for carbon and independence.

And which is cheaper?

Per unit of heat the three are closer than you'd think — gas around 7p/kWh, wood around 6p, pellets a little dearer. The real cost gap opens up on how you use them. Heat your whole house and gas usually wins on convenience-per-pound. Heat the one room you're sitting in with a stove and switch the boiler off, and wood pulls decisively ahead — and if you can source your own logs, nothing else comes close.

The carbon and green question

There's a third measure beyond cost and air quality: carbon. Wood is treated as low-carbon because a sustainably managed forest regrows and reabsorbs the CO₂ released — but that only holds if the wood is genuinely sustainably sourced and burnt efficiently; wet wood in a poor stove wastes both heat and carbon. Gas is a fossil fuel: its carbon is dug up and released for good, and it sits on a cost trajectory that only trends upward as carbon is priced in. Pellets are usually compressed sawmill waste — a by-product given a second life — so they burn clean, though processing and transport add some embodied energy. For a household weighing green credentials, sustainably sourced local wood, burnt dry in an Ecodesign stove, is the lowest-carbon and most local of the three; gas is the highest-carbon; pellet sits in between.

Want zero fuss? Gas. Want the cleanest automated burn with power on tap? Pellet. Want cheap, resilient, self-sufficient heat that keeps working when everything else is off? Wood, burnt properly. There's no universal winner — only the right match for what you value most.
